Sanskrit Name: Virabhadrasana I

Focus: Hands

Cautions: high blood pressure, shoulder issues (keep arms parallel), neck problems, vertigo, or low blood pressure (do not look up).

Benefits:

Stretches the chest and lungs, shoulders and neck, belly, groin
Strengthens the muscles of the shoulders and arms, and the back
Strengthens and stretches the thighs, calves and ankles

Instruction:

  • stand in mountain pose
  • keep your heels aligned, turn your back foot so that you can press yoru heel in the ground
  • Keep your hips square to the front edge of the mat
  • Raise your arms toward the ceiling.

Beginner: raise back heel off the ground
