Does yoga help with weight loss? Yes, yoga “helps” with weight loss but isn’t the only thing you should be doing if your goal is losing weight. Depending on how vigorous your yoga practice is (if you’re practicing with my classes, the answer is not very), the number of calories you are burning while doing yoga may vary.
Yoga has some unique benefits for weight loss. Yoga will optimize your digestive system and help your organs operate more efficiently. Yoga also calms your breathing which turns off those pesky stress hormones that can cause weight gain. Yoga can also bring about a body awareness that can shift the way you think about yourself and food, making it easier to make healthy choices.
Yoga will also be therapy for the muscle aches and pains that you should be gaining in your weight lifting and cardio workouts which are going to do the bulk of your weight-loss work. Cardio is the only way to get rid of stubborn fat. Hate traditional cardio machines? Try harnessing your inner warrior with high intensity interval training for your cardio.
Strength training increases your metabolism for up to 39 hours after the workout, and also strengthens your bones. If you are results oriented person weight training can be very rewarding as you will see strength gains quite quickly.
Combine all this with a healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, protein and a suitable amount of carbs (cut out the sugars and processed foods and sugar drinks), and you are on your way to a healthier you!
